12/01/07 - To plant or not to plant?
![]() |
That is the question... |
![]()
So much debate this week on planting trees and whether it helps the environment.
Apparently if we all buy a nice verdant oak we get - well a nice verdant oak - but little else.
So what do we do?
Well, minimising travel and energy use is - of course - going to produce less emissions but there are some off-setting schemes which appear to have greater benefits than others.
For example, Climate Care have a diverse portfolio (which if nothing else allows me to write the word 'portfolio' for the first time ever) and so fund other types of carbon reduction projects.
And Pure Trust does the double job of buying carbon credits (and thus increasing their value and cost to polluting businesses) on the behalf of carbon reduction projects - therefore investing in them.
Clever.
(In fact, it took me 5 attempts at reading their site to figure that out - but I imagine that this is because my head is fuggy with a cold and nothing to do with ineptitude....)
Or, you could calculate your emissions and put the off-setting amount aside to buy yourself energy saving lightbulbs, solar chargers, more efficient products etc.
All sorts really.
Hmm - might let Mr Blair know. He's sooooooo last year.
Anyhow - best run.
Have a fantastic weekend!!!!! x

As ever, loads in the news on the climate this week.... |
![]()
what with Tony Blair's holidaying with the Bee Gee's and Ryan air claiming to be savaged by a dead sheep.
Quite the dramas indeed.
All the while though there have been debates going on about the EU energy proposals for a reduction in green house gases up for consideration in March.
The BBC did a Q & A thing the other day (nice and simple for the likes of me) which I have only just had chance to look at. Have a gander if you are intrigued to see what's been going on and haven't already.
Anyhow - best get out into those gales.
Mind you don't get blown away when you put your umbrellas up...

But without the hell of the high street... |
![]()
High streets in the country have been ravaged of their unnecessarily shiny party wear and size 3 shoes.
And hundreds of people country wide are ramming things they didn't really want/will never fit into/bought by accident into the back of their wardrobes...
At this is not my we took the slightly lazier approach and waited till some of the fabulous companies listed in our directory brought out some great offers.
A little less hassle, a little less sweated labour and a little bit more of the things we wanted.
Brilliant!
Check out our listing of shops with sales on here.
Happy hunting! xx

Resolutions can be dull and involve far too much sacrifice.
So this year... |
![]()
we figured we would make some fun ones. And - make them good for us to.
Ahh such a win win situation.
Anyhow - check them out here.
Did a bit much of the resting one - so late for work! Best be getting along now.
Hope you are have a faaaabulous day x

Ah the holiday is over.
But the year is already looking like an exciting one...
|
![]()
Nearly recovered from the general festive mayhem (went into hiding for couple of weeks) but back and ready to head straight on into the fun of 2007!
Christmas was very entertaining (though I remain amazed as to how how the mince pie got on the ceiling/my friend Sophie's composure when the dog was sick on her foot etc).
But it's time to get life back to normal. Pretty excited about going on into New Year with it's new beginnings and all that.
So - alongside a spot of mopping, filing and rearranging my sock draw I am going on a big site clear up and improvement drive.
If you have any suggestions of amazing things we don't have listed on here please let me know so that I can get them on.
All help is much appreciated.
Anyhow - better be getting along as one of my New Year resolutions was to stop rambling... which will probably go as well as last year's 'learning a killer break dance move'! Still - no harm in at least trying for the first few days!
Hope you had amazing holidays and see you tmrw once I have had chance to furkle around for exciting things to write about.
Happy New Year from Ollie, La and me!

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)
I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.
Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)
For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.
See you tomorrow,
Susie x

Background to This is not my...
![]() |
What is this site all about?
Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?" |
![]()
What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)
Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.
Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.
We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...
And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?
Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?
And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?
So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.
So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.
We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.
In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:
Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants
You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.
Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.
Give us a shout if you want to get involved!
Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.
We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
