13/04/07 - "She's getting married
|
In the - erm - afternoon..." |
![]()
Yeay!
My first wedding of the year.
Love a good wedding.
Even though I am quite scarred by my first.
I had to wear and leotard and pretend to be a fairy.
I was 13.
And actually the second.
I was driving the wedding car.
Got lost.
Anyhow - my mate is getting married today and - thankfully - there should be no such drama's.
But it did remind me to get a link on here to the brilliant Ethical weddings site, set up by the lovely Katie Fewings.
If you are planning a life of married bliss - why not check it out.
And have an AMAZING weekend.

Running out of excuses... |
I've had being annoyingly precious about my feet this week as some blisters got infected (spent Easter morning in A & E after wafting my fetid foot at my mother and asking whether it should smell of rotting flesh... nice).
But they have been healing fast.
Which means that my excuses to sit on the couch eating chocolate are waning.
As is the excuse not to put out the recycling. Or do the washing. Or cleaning. (Health and safety may be visiting soon...)
But recycle I must. If only to have a kitchen again rather than a 'room of paper'.
Additional benefits include: environmental brownie points, a bit of a work out for the arms (I don't have a front door so don't get roadside recycling) and a bit of neighbourhood banter.
I have bumped into friends, cute boys and the man who collects burnt out bins* at the recycling point.
It is clearly the place to be.
So - if you don't want to miss out - grab all those bottles, tins and newspapers and get down there!
Have a good'un.

Not as young as I used to be... |
The thing about not being able to drink for 6 months and then being able to once again is that it is possible to get carried away... for the large part of a week.
Thankfully though I think my liver and brain have decided that enough is enough.
Just too old for the wild and crazy lifestyle of my youth.
But - there are some brilliant things coming up over the summer so there is nothing for it but to schedule in some time for letting the hair down.
First thing to get in the diary is Al Gore's Live Earth gig on the 7th July.
Registration for tickets is from midday on the 13th so make sure you get on the case on Friday morning if you want to go.
Right - best find some coffee... or sneak back to bed for just a couple of minutes...
Have a lovely day!

Forget Ali, Tyson and Lewis - for the big fight you just have to... |
head to my parents house for a few days.
To be fair, it is not such a dramatic bid for glory, but a power struggle none the less.
My parents are - in general - very energy efficient. However, there is one light. The kitchen light. That they never turn off.
Since it is a florescent strip they insist - determinedly - that it is more efficient to leave it on.
Which I have been sure it isn't.
For the last 2 years. They turn it on. I turn it off. They turn it on. I turn it off. (You see how this goes.) Till - eventually - my Mum breaks and shouts at me. I then sulk like a child (despite the fact that I haven't been a child for a very long time) and - when she isn't looking - turn it off again and tell her my Dad did it...
Anyhow, intermittently in this time, I have been looking for something to back up my belief about the efficiency of strip lighting and finally, finally I have found it.
So - please excuse my precocious delight as I now quote from the National Energy Foundation site.
"Should I leave CFLs on when I leave a room to keep saving money?
No! There used to be a general belief that because fluorescent strip lights used more power in their warm-up phase, then it was better to leave them on all the time. This was never true"
Brilliant!
Right - best get back to being a grown up again!*
Hope you had a brilliant Easter.

*Just as soon as I have given them a call. And printed off the evidence and sent it. And then written a song about it. And got someone to mention that I was right on national radio. Or the news....

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)
I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.
Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)
For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.
See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...
![]() |
What is this site all about?
Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?" |
![]()
What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)
Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.
Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.
We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...
And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?
Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?
And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?
So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.
So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.
We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.
In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:
Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants
You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.
Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.
Give us a shout if you want to get involved!
Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.
We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
