27/04/07 - A little bit of candle light
![]() |
A little bit of music... |
![]()
No - sadly not a romantic moment - rather an unexpected black out.
In all the excitement of 'Walk to Work' day I forgot to mention it.
But yeah - we had one.
After the initial jokes about not paying the bill. And the consqeuent worry that - actually - hold on - when DID we last pay the bill - we located some matches. And then established that no fuses had blown.
Much shouting at people in the street led us to ascertain that it was an area-wide issue.
And that there was nothing to be done but to track down more candles.
And..... crank up the wind up radio!
Oh yes, ladies and gentlemen, a little electricity loss wont stop the crazy partying in our house (though the friends who had to endure the 'accidental' Heart FM tuning might have hoped otherwise!)
Anyhow - it was all thanks to the EyeMax LED wind up radio - available from Nigel's Eco Store.
It doesn't come cheap at £40 but it is a great machine!
Even when you have power.
Anyhow - talking of partying...
It's the weekend - wooo hoo!!! Hope that you do a lot of it.

but it looks like rain... |

Yeay - it's 'Walk to work day'!
But... just woke up to find that it's raining.
Ah.
I love walking to work. I often do (well run - it's a bit long if you walk). And my house mate was really up for a pleasant wander. Plus we had almost convinced some other friends that they wanted to as well. (Brentford. Why that can only be an hour from Peckham by foot.....?)
But it's raining.
And I'm a fair weather kind of girl.
So... today we might make it... 'Walk BACK from work day' instead.
Either way, pretty entertained by the fact that there will be loads of people dressed as Dolly Parton in the London Bridge area.
I'm hoping they'll be staging a ho down.
Love a good ho down before breakfast...
Have a good one!
Oooh and - if you can - hope you have a nice potter back home too.

What we learnt, living in a tepee. |

What we learnt, living in a tepee.
I was fortunate enough to be selected to go on the Howies Little Big Voice Lectures two weekends ago now in the beautiful Cardigan Bay. The purpose was to host lectures and workshops that would help the little guy get a voice in media.
The recipe for the weekend was: gather some inspirational and approachable speakers, mix with twentyeight driven, funny and fantastic attendees, simmer at sunshine temperature, immerse said parties in an spectacular teepee induced Forest farm environment, liberally pepper with elephantine proportions of delectable organic cuisine, wash down with boundless bottles of saporous social lubricant andstew for three amazing and inspirational days. Then you have the Little Big Voice Lectures.
They built the fantastic website, replete with embarrassing photos of me dressed up as a cave man, over the actual weekend.
Take some time to check out the speakers and read there presentations. Most will be available to pod cast in the next week or so.
Thanks Howies for helping us shout or message from the rooftops!
Have a inspiring and infomative day!

that it's a step too far.
Others, that it's quite sensible... |

Kim, my long suffering house mate, sent me this link.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6583067.stm
It was simply entitled....
No, no no!!!!
Ah yes my friends, Cheryl Crow has gone where others fail to dare.
She will be saving the planet one wipe at a time!
The singer has just begun a campaign to stop the waste of loo roll.
Kim, a true friend, has happily changed to recycled paper, learnt to live with the new cleaning products and accepted that the security light doesn't actually light up till you are already in the house - but this appears a step too far!
Ah well, little steps.
Besides - not sure how good I am going to be at this one.
Interesting campaign though.
And her email made me laugh.
A lot!
Hope you are all having crazy days.

has a silver lining... |

We're dropping like flies round here.
Ol has an infection and I - well - managed to fall off a roof playing golf (don't ask, but it wasn't big or clever).
Other than after a very amusing visit to A & E with a friend a couple of years ago (the other people there had been at an S&M party!) I have never been before.
Yet in the last two weeks I have been twice. As has Ollie.
Hoping that that is a good enough excuse to have failed to write anything exciting on Friday. Sorry!
Anyhow - there was one plus.
After chipping a couple of teeth (and perfecting the Mutley look) I have been having a bit of trouble eating.
Nothing too bad but enough to be very distressing if you are in the park on a sunny afternoon and can't have any ice cream.
No ice cream?!
What kind of sunny afternoon park trip is that?
But as luck would have it - there is one thing which can help.... milk shake!
And I have re-found the BEST chocolate milk shake in the whole of London. That at AMT.
AMT are great. They are little coffee places found in train stations and some high streets. They are 100% fairtrade with organic milk and all sorts of delicious things.
Including their milk shake.
Especially their milk shake.
Hmmmmmmm.

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)
I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.
Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)
For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.
See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...
![]() |
What is this site all about?
Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?" |
![]()
What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)
Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.
Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.
We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...
And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?
Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?
And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?
So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.
So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.
We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.
![]()
So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.
In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:
Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants
You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.
Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.
Give us a shout if you want to get involved!
Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.
We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
