Fact

This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

04/05/07 - Sleep...?

Who needs sleep...?

Man alive - will I be pleased to see this weekend.

There has been a distinct lack of sleep going on over the last couple of days. Far too much of it work related (boo).

But the weekend it nearly is. And - sweet mercy - it is a long one (yeay).

Which just leaves today to get through.

And I have all of the requisite (legal) aids in order to do it. Namely:

1) Coffee (Cafe direct) and

2) Chocolate (Divine... oh it is, it really is...)

It's not a healthy approach I'll grant you but they are organic and fair trade which somehow has managed to equate to 'good for you' in my sluggish brain.*

Anyhow - This is not my life is all going along nicely.

We will have the new and improved site in June (ok so it was going to be April... then May.... but hey life's too short to get pedantic about things, right?) the UN thinks they have struck a deal on climate change (or to be pessamistic) and Ollie and I got to spend an afternoon in the park plotting exciting things and trying not to watch a man getting frisky with his girlfriend (people, get a room... some of us lonely spinsters could get jealous...)

So, once the coffee kicks in, life will be fabulous.

And fun awaits. (So much darning and cat food purchasing to be done and so little time...)

Hope you have an amazing weekend!

*Fear that I may have slipped into my fathers dieting patterns of eating exactly the same... but adding fruit...

03/05/07 - Being late for work

is so good for the environment...

Not only do you get the energy saving lie in (one of my favourite environmentally friendly pursuits) but... it forces you into a shorter shower.

Ahh - showering.

I love it.

Stay in for far too long. (Cue exciting fact: a normal 5 minute shower uses 35 litres of water, a bath or power shower uses 80 litres.)

And I love hot showers. Really hot. Almost scalding. (I have fainted a couple of times from the heat which is usually an indication that it might be up an eeensy bit high.)*

But I am trying to cut back.

Nothing too dramatic - just slightly shorter showers and fewer first degree burns. That sort of thing.

Which means that now I have suceeded in getting clean swiftly - there is nothing left but to make the dash for the station and get all sweaty again.

Ah well - nevermind.

Better run!

*I also love showers as they give me an opportunity to use this highly entertaining picture!

02/05/07 - All sorts of amazing events

on climate change going on at the minute but...

the Anti-apathy one piqued my interest more than the others.

Ah yes.

It is an age old trick.

They cunningly entitled it: Sex and Climate Change

Well - you can hardly say no to that!

Discussions on an important cause with a spot of wild flirtation as they put "wanton, filthy debauchery back at the heart of saving the planet."

Excellent news indeed.

Get your tickets before they run out!

In the meantime back to more mundane things though - question of the day: Anyone know how bad toasters are for the environment?

Not sure I can give mine up (it is my main cooking implement) but am wondering nevertheless.

Quite amused that the google search for green toasters brought up an Irish site explaining that for green toast you "put food colouring on the bread".

Well - it's a good point.

Not exactly what I was looking for though...

01/05/07 - Sweaty and a little bit overexcitable

Qualities that...

I look for in a man.

Hence my love of the Kaiser Chiefs. (Music's pretty good but - more importantly - they are leaders in the field of jumping about enthusiastically!)

Anyhow - they are some of the people supporting the Unpluggit campaign to get people to - well - uplug things. (See what they did there...)

Which makes me even more of a fan than I already was when my lovely friend Colin pointed it out on - the terrible work distraction that is - facebook.

Anyhow - sign up!

Oooh and join our facebook page too. (Decided to pretend that being on facebook WAS work at some point by setting up a group for general high jinx and mayhem).

Anyhow - busy old day so best potter off.

Oooh and Ollie should be out of hospital today. Can't wait to have you back Ol! xx

30/04/07 - "I want to ride my bicycle..."

My OWN bicycle that is...

Hopped down to Devon for the weekend.

I didn't have long so was up crazy early for the bus and by the time I arrived was all set for a nice relaxing afternoon at the seaside.

My friends arrived to pick me up.

"There's not enough room in the car but don't worry, two of us can get straight on the bikes."

Bikes, bikes...?

"You jump in though and we'll pick up the others from the bike hire."

Hmmm - perhaps not restful but a peaceful saunter by the river could be just the thing....

They trundled off and we joined them a few minutes later.

A TANDEM!

Yes - the cheeky b*ggers thought it would be funny.

And to put me on the thing with the only friend of mine who has a) nearly killed me snow boarding ("Just go down really fast and see what happens"... 'shove'... "But it's an icy black ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun") and b) nearly killed me by driving swiftly down a one-way system... the wrong way.

Man alive!

Anyhow - it was brilliant.

Death defying, heart stopping and one of the most frightening experiences of my life - but brilliant.

Plus - it has inspired me to get back on my bike at home.

It is only a 4 mile cycle to work, it is beautifully sunny and most of it is through parks.

More to the point, none of it involves anyone else being on the bicycle with me and in charge of the direction of travel!

If you fancy doing the same, Transport for London have some useful tips on their website and you will just about have time to get used to the wheels before the London Naked Bike Ride on the 9th June.

Could be a good way to avoid tan lines....

This Section

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)

I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.

Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)

For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.

See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...

Interview Picture

What is this site all about?

Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?"

What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)

Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.

Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.

We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...

And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?

Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?

And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?

So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.

So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.

We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

The point

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.

In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:

Baby and Child

Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants

Transport
Travel

You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.

Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.

Give us a shout if you want to get involved!

Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.

We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
