on the river... |
![]()
Didn't make it home last night (sadly nothing more exciting than staying on my friends sofa) but that did mean we got to take the boat to work.
Woo hoo!
It rocks.
If you live by the river it is a great way to travel.
Not only is it much nicer than the tube but it might be more environmentally friendly.
I say 'might' as I actually have no idea.
I found some info. on environmentally friendly boat engines but I'm not certain that it really applies to the ferry type vessel we were on...
What it does have though is tea in a mug!
None of this throw away cup malarkey.
Which has to be a good thing right?
And the tea tastes better.
Go the mug!
Anyhow - best stop rambling but first - an amazing thing happened.
Read my horoscope and it said:
"People could save themselves years of stress by just accepting there's a bloody big tree at the end of the garden."
And there is - since yesterday - a bloody big tree at the end of my garden! (Well some say garden, some say alleyway).
Who'd have thought.
Wonder if the other 500 million Capricorns have one too...
Have a great weekend!

the proud owners of a tree.
Accidentally.
Where can I get an axe....? |
![]()
Got home late yesterday to find my pathway somewhat obscured.
By a massive tree.
Which was a surprise.
They have been doing building work next door which appears to have had a rather detrimental effect on the surrounding area - most specifically the surrounding area that contains said tree.
- Problem one is that it is a kind of out of the way entrance. (In a sort of 'I bet no one else is going to do anything about that tree' type way.)
- And problem two is that it is a BIG tree.
Hmmmm.
Mission: 'Find out what the b***** b***** you do if you suddenly find yourself in possession of a tree' began in earnest.
And - low and behold - should you ever find yourself in a similar situation in the London area - all you have to do is potter on to the 'Report a fallen tree' section of YourLondon and it will tell you what to do.
How good is that?
I just need to give Streetcare a ring and they will sort it out for me.
I hope.
And I hope that they can save it (can you replant the roots?) as: "A single mature tree can release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings".*
Ah well - if all else fails we just have to track down an axe.
Been reading up on garden waste which - not having a garden - I had no idea what to do with. And - small branches etc you can recycle just like anything else (except in a brown bin rather than a green one).
So there you go.
Right - best give Streetcare a call... or the fire service.
Well - firemen have axes right....?
Have a lovely day!

at the climate reduction measures taken by our TV stations... |
![]()
It may seem like a strange way to encourage the lowering of emissions but it is an incredible tactic:
Simply go on about climate change so much that anyone who values their sanity will turn off the television and do something entirely different instead.
Genius.
Argh!!!!
(I know I can hardly judge but if I see another cut away to someone screwing in an energy efficient light bulb the sledgehammer is coming out!)
Actually - I might just avoid the television until winter.
Ostensibly for energy saving reasons but in reality to ensure I don't lose the most productive years of my life figuring out which twin is which on Big Brother.
Anyhow - hope life is all good when you are.
Off to join the WI...

between good and evil... |
![]()
Ah - gone are the days of sitting in with a good book or an embroidered quilt cover. Few are the evenings spent in quiet repose hoping for a visitor or a letter to alight upon the door mat.
Sometimes the world is crazy, wild and unadulterated!
Last night - yes - last night no less, I headed to the shower only to find... it was blocked.
(Dun dun dun derrrr)
And (much as I was enjoying the ankle bath resulting from the excess body parts in our plug hole) I knew this to be wrong.
But what to do? (Shock, awe, fear, exhilaration)
The suggestion of sink un-blocker rang alarm bells in my ears.
I couldn't. (Could I? Should I? No!)
And then I saw it.
Like a beacon of hop, quietly idling under the basin.
The plunger.
How could I have forgotten?
One short bicep work out later and I was watching a satisfying drainage.
Phew.
The relief was monumental.
It had been a battle fought and won.
A wrestle between good and evil.
An epic journey of courage of wisdom.
I shall call it:
(Cue the deep and booming voice of James Earl Jones)
The Day of the Plunge!
Might also try to get out a bit more...
Have a good one.

But - thankfully - not the Morris dancing... |
![]()
Ah summer is finally here.
Crazy antics are springing forth around the capital and the subconcious desire to consume a steady flow of ice cream is almost paralyzing.
Saturday saw Pants to Poverty running around Parliament Square and Sunday the launch of Love London - London Sustainability Weeks with the Camden Green Fair.
Very sadly I missed the first but did manage to pop into the second and catch a load of the fun things going on there.
Not least the morris dancing.
Honestly.
Morris dancing is way better to the tune of Bohemian Rhapsody and - as my friend Dave will attest - when done by four beautiful women with short skirts on!
Anyhow - there will be loads going on for the next few days as part of Love London so if you get a chance, why not check some of it out.
Hope you're week has started well.

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)
I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.
Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)
For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.
See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...
![]() |
What is this site all about?
Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?" |
![]()
What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)
Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.
Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.
We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...
And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?
Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?
And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?
So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.
So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.
We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.
![]()
So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.
In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:
Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants
You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.
Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.
Give us a shout if you want to get involved!
Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.
We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
