This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

16/09/2006 - Something's are possible.

Something's are impossible.

But there is no harm trying...

Had a funny old weekend.

Got myself into a bit of bother by developing a severe case of insomnia. And then my mother came to stay...

Everything began to unravel.

On Saturday we were meant to go on the climate march - in pajamas. Didn't manage. On Sunday we were meant to be filming viral's to highlight different environmental issues. Didn't manage that either.

Due to a series of unforeseen problems (and not for lack of trying) - nothing went to plan!

Neither thing was hard or complicated but - for some unknown reason - became impossible.

Luckily, in the grand scheme of things, these things really don't matter.

What does matter though is the US administration changing their opposition to action on climate change and someone discovering 'free energy'.

Both of which may be a possibility.

The Independent reported yesterday that, "President Bush is preparing an astonishing U-turn on global warming." And the Guardian, that two men in Dublin believe they have created a free energy technology.

So the possible wasn't but the impossible may not be... (Sure that statement will make sense once the coffee kicks in...) Topsy turvy old world.

Anyhow - regardless of the amazing amount of ineptitude that went on - learnt some good lessons.

1) No one bats an eyelid if you wander around town in a nightie and 2) never tell your mates that the role you need them to help you with last minute involves a rather close and personal medical examination...

Still - it all worked out in the end.

We are now filming next Sunday instead and - because we did at least make it into town on Saturday - got to go on a Helter Skelter!

Hoping that things don't throw up quite so many challenges and surprises this week though...

Have a good one x

15/09/2006 - Coming home late last night.

And I saw something I never thought possible...

A man on my train put an ENTIRE baguette in his mouth and then sort of only ate the bit that must have hit somewhere around his ribs and removed the rest...

Well - that was what it looked like.

Quite incredible.

Anyhow - it has restored my faith in the impossible - which is always good as so many things seem impossible but really aren't that hard.

Had quite a ponder about it... well for the remainder of the 10 minute journey... and after I had got over the shock of the man with the phenomenal gullet... so for a good 3 or 4 minutes at least!

La must also have been in pensive mood as she sent through the Horoscopes for September... based on her pets?!

They are good though so have a look to see what the month has in store for you.

She is a fully qualified mystic.*

Other than that I am afraid that I haven't been able to do anything of interest.

Well - unless of course you are interested in cutting and pasting insurance law into a database and organising a theatre trip for my mother - so I shall just leave you to mull over life and the universe.

Remember that you can feel free to do so from a lovely lounging position with me (nudge nudge wink wink) tmrw when we have our sleep-in with a twist.

The twist being that it is technically not a sleep in.

As you have to get somewhere.

And then pretend to sleep...

Have rather unfortunately been too snowed under to get round to advertising it (ooops) so will be quite amazed if anyone other than those pre-cajoled - comes along.

Would love to be surprised though.

It will be highly entertaining whichever way.

My mother is insisting on coming and if all else fails we will just get loads of pictures of us lying about in amusing London locations dressed in pajamas.

Fun.

Anyhow - if you can't make it tmrw don't feel left out.

Sure that we can make use of any pictures you have of your mates and loved ones 'saving energy'. Aka asleep and drooling on the bus or passed out after too many tia maria and coke's... send them in!

Anyhow - shall stop rambling and get along but hope that you have a fantastic Friday!

*There is no ounce of truth to this statement whatsoever.

14/09/2006 - Even more tired.

Moan, moan, moan.

It is all fine though as on Saturday...

we are going to have our little snooze!

Woo hoo.

It is a teeny bit last minute I admit but I noticed two days ago that the Campaign Against Climate Change are holding a National Day of Action.

And we wanted to do something.

So.... be spontaneous (ok - ish - there are still 2 days to go) and come and join us for the This is not my... sleep-in!!!

Why would you have a sleep-in which you have to get up for? I hear you ask...*

Well.

In just 200 years, the amount of carbon dioxide (C02) in the atmosphere – the major gas that causes climate change – has increased by 30 per cent.

Most scientists agree that the cause of this dramatic increase is the use of fossil fuels that release C02 when they are burned to make energy.

This increase has brought about global warming.

In order to reduce our impact on the environment (and the impact of our rising energy bills!) we need to use less. There are many easy ways to do this.

For example, energy efficient light bulbs use a quarter of the energy of inefficient, getting better insulation saves 40% of heat loss in the average home and buying local food saves energy used in transportation.

Computers, televisions, cookers, showers, washing machines, kettles etc all use energy but…

There is a time in everyone’s day when they use little or no energy at all.... when they are sleeping.

So we thought we'd highlight it as a way to save pounds, people and planet.

The main jist though being the importance of simply using less.

Plus - and quite importantly - it is the only thing we thought we could organise in a couple of days!

So details are:

Time: Mid day
Date: 16th September
Place: Lincoln's Inn Fields
Dress: As you are... for bed... or in something a little more comfortable!

The proper Campaign march is to start outside the Exxon offices in Aldwych at 12.30.

We will therefore be handily located right round the corner for anyone who wants to join in with something slightly more active just after!

So yep - get there if you can. Bring a pillow. Bring a teddy. Bring a bed if you are feeling keen!

Fun fun fun.

Find all the details on our Sleep-in page and send it on to everyone you know who might want to pop down. Heck why not everyone who might not too (you just never know?)

Anymore details and I will get them up here in tmrw's ramblings but if you have any questions just drop me a line at susie@thisisnotmy.co.uk

Hope to see you there!

*Still hearing those voices!

13/09/2006 - So tired.

All I can think of is closing my eyes.

But that is ok because...

As we all know, sleeping is very energy efficient.

If everything is turned off standby and we don't fall asleep with the lights, music and TV on then we are using nothing more than the calories required to keep us ticking over.

Perfect.

Unfortunately for me right now though I have too much to do to retreat back to bed but - there is nothing to stop me having a bit of a lie-in on Saturday.

In fact, I will be making a point of it.... literally.

Would love it if you come and join me! (Ooooer)

On Saturday the Campaign Against Climate Change is holding a national day of Action.

For which This is not my... will be sleeping.

Actively...

I.e. to highlight just how little energy we use as we snooze and conversely (and more importantly) how much we use when we don't we will head along to Lincoln's Inn Field's at 12 to have a - point making - five minute slumber.

Then head round the corner to join the start of the appropriately - yet not all that reassuringly - entitled, Race Against Climate Doom.

Come and play!

Well - as much as you can in silence... with your eyes shut... Should be nice and relaxing and put us in the perfect position to support the Campaign straight after.

I have all the details on a great flyer Ollie made up but naturally can't figure out how to change one thing and so am going to have to put it up tmrw and instead distract you with one of the funniest things I have seen in AGES.

Pottered off to my friend's Rick and Karen yesterday as they are wonderful and helping us put together some video virals.

All was going to plan till Rick insisted that I watch some of R Kelly's 'Trapped in the Closet' which has to be one of the funniest

things I have ever seen.... because it isn't a joke!

Far from it. He is absolutely serious.

You have probably seen it but I hadn't and if you haven't either then you have to.

Yes - R Kelly has made a hip hopera.

Me oh my.

It has the same tune for ALL 12 EPISODES and for a taste of the lyrics try:

He walks up to the closet (closet)
He’s close up to the closet (closet)
Now he’s at the closet (closet)
Now he’s opening the closet (closet, closet, closet)

But they are nothing in comparison with the twist in Episode 9! Wont ruin it for you but you can see it all through the YouTube links on this review. If you only have time to see one part then make it that one...

Truly. It is a marvel!

Anyhow - with that I shall pootle off to find some coffee but have a lovely day xx

12/09/2006 - A cheeky drink.

Can it help you save the planet...?

It is a bit of a long shot but worth a try I guess and if you are going to give it a go then there is certainly no better place to start than Green Drinks.

"Every month people who work in the environmental field meet up for a beer at informal sessions known as Green Drinks."

In London it is the second Tuesday of each month. I.e. today.

If you want to meet all sorts of people working on environmental projects, in charities and NGO's and usually Ollie, Lara and I then you just potter along to the pub. The Glasshouse Stores to be exact.

Clearly this would be the one week when neither Ol, Lara nor I can go (I am furthering my bid for sainthood by working, Lara is on holiday and Ollie has indulgently decided that he will spend the evening with his girlfriend who is away for two weeks tmrw - some people I don't know...)

Anyhow - I can assure you that on all previous occasions when we have headed down it has been a really great experience.

Loads of very friendly and interesting people all more than happy to chat with everyone else.

Give it a try.

Or - just stay at home with a nice refreshing cider!

Now I am not a cider drinker myself but I am a huge fan of this years summer favourite.

Cider made by Bulmers (Strongbow, Woodpecker, Scrumpy Jack) is all made in the UK - which means that it has been made without air miles.

Brilliant.

Forget those Ozzie Beers and Californian wines - good old English cider - it's the way forward.

Having said that I am now really hoping that tmrws headline news isn't "Bulmers cider sweat shop hell" or similar...!

If it is though, then there is nothing to worry about as the UK has a whole host of other smaller cider makers who make 'even better for the environment' organic drinks such as Westons, Dunkertons and Crones.

So there you go.

It may just be Tuesday but you'd best get on it.

Saving the world isn't just a weekend job you know....

Have a good one. Susie x

This Section

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)

I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.

Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)

For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.

See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...

Interview Picture

What is this site all about?

Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?"

What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)

Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.

Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.

We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...

And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?

Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?

And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?

So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.

So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.

We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

The point

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.

In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:

Baby and Child

Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants

Transport
Travel

You will also find debates, downloads, fun stuff and plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis.

We’d love you to get involved with some curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.

So - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.

We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
