and environmentally friendly...? |
![]()
Got ridiculed again for owning a disc man.
I like it!
It has a radio on (which uses less energy than the CD part).
And it's one step up from the walkman still lurking somewhere in a cupboard.
Anyhow - I was also challenged on its environmental credentials as it uses batteries but... I use the rechargeable variety which are brilliant (and cheap).
So if you use them for anything you should definitely look into getting some.
Not only do they save you each time you use them but could save you £100 on a new fangled MP3 player when you know your old disc man will do just the job!
Have a lovely weekend all.
Hope there is lots of fun and mischief involved.

but very happy... |
![]()
Finally after four months I made it back to my first proper Parkour class.
Woo hoo.
Managed to have a bit of an accident prone period back in May when I twisted my ankle.
Very irritating.
Not least because at the time I was fitter than I will ever be again - often running the six miles to the class - and yesterday I was seizing up before it was even over!
Ah well - it was still brilliant to be outside and jumping about (with the men with lovely muscles).
Can definitely recommend it.
So - if you fancy turning off the TV / computer etc then come and play!
Maybe see you there one day.

I'm definitely not moving to the arctic... |
![]()
Reading an article in the Independent this morning: 'Toxic chemicals blamed for the disappearance of the Arctic boys'
Apparently, due to the high levels of chemical pollutants in our water (and the large amount of seafood in the Inuit diet) there are now twice as many girls as boys in the Arctic circle.
And increasingly elsewhere.
How crazy is that?
I mean, I suppose it shows that females are clearly the stronger sex... but there are going to be a few young ladies left crying into their popcorn on a Saturday night.
Not good.
It is quite tricky though.
I went to get some shampoo yesterday and - for the very reason of avoiding chemicals - popped into the Aveda shop.
I love Aveda.
It smells divine, they strive to use natural ingredients and they give money to green funds... but so they should, considering that buying more than one item costs more than a holiday to Disneyland... for four!
Anyway, once the palpitations had receded I did make a purchase. Owing in no small part to the enthusiasm of the shop assistant. (Never before have I seen someone so wholeheartedly enthuse about Boswellia serratta, tamanu oil and other unpronounceable ingredients - even going so far as to mime the collection of tourmaline as it falls from the arms of indigenous miners - what dedication!)
But it was expensive.
Fortunately there are now a load of other brands out which put a greater emphasis on ingredients (in all sorts of products) and don't cost quite as much.
Might be worth checking out labeling every once in a while.*
After all - it's hard enough to track down the young men of London town now. What's it going to be like when we outnumber them 2:1.
Me oh my.
Have a good one.

*Many of the most harmful pollutants are in hormone replacements as well as those chemicals which emulate these (i.e. flame retardants). EU legislation in 2006 was enacted to curb the use of these but it did not go as far as campaign groups such as Greenpeace and the WWF would have liked.

Again... |
![]()
Mostly because it is Organic Fortnight but then because that got me thinking about winter.
If I cook, I try cooking what's in season (sadly since this is roughly every four months it alone may not save us from impending ecological disaster) which is annoying at the end of the year.
Turnips.
Really?
Who actually likes those?
Anyhow - there are still lots of delicious things growing now so I might take the opportunity to cook loads up and store it (saves energy to cook in bulk and to have a full freezer)...
Right after I get round to doing all of the other things which would be a good idea but seem to get usurped by - um - all the things that are bad ideas.
Ah well - guess there's always toast.
Sure they were making perennial wheat a while back...

for a Monday morning... |
![]()
Trying to do a spot of research into environmentally friendly holidays.
There are so many great things to do out there!
After a brilliant and relaxing weekend this is not helping me with the getting to work aspect of my Monday...
Anyhow - if you too want to spend a moment daydreaming yourself off somewhere else - why not try:
Dhow Safari's - Mozambique
Low impact sailing on the Bazaruto Marine Park
Building an Eco Lodge / currently sleep onboard
http://www.sailaway.co.za/htmls/home.htm
(Obviously this would involve a three month hitch hiking foray through Europe and Africa...)
Or - for the winter:
White-pod - Switzerland
Low impact pods, (white in winter / green in summer), recycled furniture, local produce, eco-education
www.whitepod.com
(Get there on the Trenhotel)
Hmmmm

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)
I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.
Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)
For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.
See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...
![]() |
What is this site all about?
Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?" |
![]()
What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)
Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.
Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.
We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...
And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?
Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?
And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?
So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.
So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.
We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.
In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:
Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants
You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.
Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.
Give us a shout if you want to get involved!
Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.
We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
