Fact

This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

12/10/07 - Procrastinating

Moi?

How hard can it be to measure the loft?

Just track down the tape measure and go up stairs....

Will definitely do it!

And then sort out the insulation... and the timer for the heating that doesn't work.

(Despite pressing all the buttons in a randomly selected order which everyone knows usually fixes anything!)

But with heating / cooling accounting for 50 - 70% of the average home in the developed world it is important to sort it out.

So I will.

Right after organising a pantomime about a monkey.

In French...

Have a great weekend!

11/10/07 - Take a deep breath

  And relinquish all pride...

It is all change here at the minute.

The new revamped website is (finally - woo hoo) almost finished, new shenanigans are being plotted and the promotional video virals are in.

Oh yes.

They are.

It was quite a while back when we thought it would be a good idea to do some carry-on style sketches to encourage people to recycle, turn things off standby, save water etc.

But it is only now that they have emerged...

Oh lord my mother is going to kill me!

Anyhow - since the new site wont be up for a month I am hoping we can do something else which has a Christmas theme and put those ones off until the new year.

I mean - new year - new set of excruciatingly embarrassing video virals...?

Anyhow - lots of exciting things going on but - despite this - I WILL measure my loft for insulation this week if it is the last thing I do.

Please shout at me if I don't.

It's getting a bit chilly out there...

10/10/07 - Hmmmmm

This could make things a little complicated...

One of my best friends is working in New York at the minute and another in Montreal.

Which is really complicated in terms of phoning (getting a bit old and decrepit so generally heading to bed as they get out of work).

And so I have been considering a trip across the pond.

But I am also trying not to fly.

Which is a bit of a problem.

The other day, though, I thought I had stumbled across the solution.

Cargo ship!

Perfect.

Not only would it save energy but allow me to spend a week beating hot Russian sailors in vodka shot competitions (possibly a bit idealised...)

Anyhow - low and behold... the Independent article on shipping pollution.

Damnations.

Thwarted again! (If it wasn't for those pesky kids..?!)

Right - so - who has a yacht...?

09/10/07 - Sometimes

  life really isn't fair...

Have you seen it?

Have you?

Wispa's.

They're back!

But - I just gave up chocolate.

Argh!

Watched the Great African Scandal, a fascinating - yet pretty depressing - programme the other day which highlighted the disparity between fair trade and non-fair trade chocolate.

And since then I have given up the non-fair trade variety.

Well - apart from a tiny accident involving a mocha... it was a drink... I forgot!

Anyhow - as luck would have I happened to be walking past the Montezuma chocolate shop the other day (if 'happened to be walking past' can be stretched to encompass a 20 minute detour...) so I have stocked up.

Plus they keep getting delicious Divine chocolate in the office too.

So hopefully temptation can be avoided.

Just as long as they don't drag out the marshmallow filled wonder that was the 'Secret'!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

08/10/07 - Keeping

  my fingers crossed.

I live down an alley.

It's actually really nice (though some visitors have been a little skeptical) but recently the shop next door started to do some renovations.

Which is lovely - as now I have an organic bakery out the front - but not so lovely as I also have vast piles of junk out the back.

Hmmm.

Anyhow - came home the other day to find a skip outside. Woo hoo!

It looks like it is finally going (though they may need more than just the one skip...).

I really hope so.

If only to stop my Gran worrying that we have rats!

Anyhow - have been inspired to get rid of all of the things lurking about cluttering up the place.

So going to investigate freecycle.

It is basically like Ebay but you don't have to pay. (Which my bank manager would agree is the kind of site I should be looking at at the minute!)

Anyhow - bit of a hectic weekend so best be getting along but have a brilliant start to the week.

This Section

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)

I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.

Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)

For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.

See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...

Interview Picture

What is this site all about?

Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?"

What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)

Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.

Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.

We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...

And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?

Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?

And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?

So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.

So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.

We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

The point

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.

In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:

Baby and Child

Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants

Transport
Travel

You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.

Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.

Give us a shout if you want to get involved!

Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.

We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
