This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

26/10/07 - Water

I need water...

A teeny bit of oversleeping again.

Oops.

Had a work event last night with a free bar which is always a bit dangerous. Might have to reassess my thoughts on over consumption when it comes to wine...

Anyway - it means that not only am I running late but I will now spend the rest of the day drinking as much water as can humanly fit in my body.

From.... a water bottle that can be refilled.

(Woo hoo - knew there was a green angle somewhere in the hangover!)

There has been loads in the press recently about bottled water.

We spend a massive amount on it, it isn't good for the environment and - erm - something about banning it in France.

Anyhow - about to be late so didn't have chance to do a proper search for said articles but did manage to find something from 'Beverage Daily' on it. (Beverage Daily - who'd have thought?!)

So - yes - um - the point of this is - erm - have a great weekend and don't buy too much bottled water?!

Lovely.

25/10/07 - Money

money, money...

Me oh my - it is the day I have been putting off for a weeks but can no longer ignore.

Yes.

It is... accounts day!

Woo hoo!

Yeah!

Bring it on!

Whoop!

(Nah - still not exciting...)

Basically, I have to sort out my accounts and pay my taxes or someone will come round to my house and take all of the furniture (It's true. I've seen the movies - even crying doesn't work... and then they shoot out your knee caps...)

Anyhow - this got me thinking about an article I read the other day on environmental funds.

Sadly I am not sure that the funds accept investments of under £2.50 but if you are interested it specifically mentioned: Schroder's Global Climate Fund.

And I am sure there are many more.

Thus, I shall investigate.

Along side all my other investigations.

(Honestly - I really might get round to measuring the loft for insulation today...)

Anyhow - life is hunkydory.

24/10/07 - This is madness

it's night out there...

Hmmm up before dawn.

This is not good.

I have studiously pushed my alarm back 5 minutes a day to avoid having to get up in what is essentially night.

But - alas - no more.

Today I was up way before the sun (which I am sure is illegal in some countries).

And - as an environmentally concerned citizen I am not happy.

In fact, the prospect of using precious energy to turn the lights on forced me back to sleep for several minutes...

Anyhow - it did get me thinking about the need to make sure that all of the bulbs in the house are energy saving ones.

Think the in efficient one on the hall stairs has so far missed the cull - mostly as it involves taking your life into your hands to reach it precariously balanced on the banister... actually - that sounds kind of fun....

Have a lovely morning x

23/10/07 - Taking the rough

with the smooth...

It was a bit of an up and down day yesterday.

Firstly there was the up.

A while back I had mentioned (ok - moaned) about the lack of fair trade chocolate syrup in my work coffee shop. It may seem a bit pedantic (they have already changed the proper chocolate) but my mid-afternoon Mocha fix had been curtailed and I was getting angsty!

But - the wonderful man who works there told me that he had convinced his boss to change it.

Woo hoo!

(See you just have to ask... and tip the wink...)

But this moment was short lived.

As then came the down.

On returning to my desk I found that - ever so slightly zealous turning off my monitor meant that - I had broken the button!

So it is permanently on.

Damnations.

The lovely lady I work next to (and who is generally very patient when subjected to daily environmental scheming) couldn't suppress a smile.

The perversity!

Anyhow - I shall be calling IT when I get in.

Hmpf.

Right after a cheeky Mocha en route!

22/10/07 - Getting in

my trousers...

Since 1992 I have had trouble with my trousers.

That was roughly the year I stopped growing and everyone else kept on going.

Also the year I gave up netball.

And utilising anything left on a high shelf.

The other day I had to pin up a pair of jeans (trying to be a grown up and not just cut the bottoms off - sadly not yet grown up enough to make it to the tailors) and then - naturally - ended up stumbling on the unsealed turn up.

Which was a bit embarrassing.

Though - I did stumble into the arms of an attractive young man so it wasn't all bad!

Anyhow - most of the clothes highlighted on this site need to be bought on-line. And, though I have got some great things that way, I have never been brave enough to buy trousers in case they don't fit.

All of which is a very long winded way of saying that Howies have just opened a shop on Carnaby Street!

Woooo hooooo.

And rumour has it that their trousers are great.

Brilliant.

Will have to get down there.

Right after I have written to the 'no one ACTUALLY writes into that' random encounters section of the paper:

"If you were the heroic brown haired man who caught me in the street the other day...."

This Section

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)

I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.

Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)

For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.

See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...

Interview Picture

What is this site all about?

Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?"

What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)

Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.

Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.

We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...

And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?

Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?

And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?

So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.

So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.

We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

The point

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.

In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:

Baby and Child

Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants

Transport
Travel

You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.

Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.

Give us a shout if you want to get involved!

Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.

We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
