Fact

This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

23/12/07 - Happy Christmas

Happy Christmas...!

Phew.

Made it.

Been a bit of a mission to get to this weekend but now it is only a couple of days until... Christmas!

Brilliant.

Hope that you all have an amazing time and see you in the New Year!

Big fat kisses,

Susie, Ollie and Lara xxx

19/12/07 - Only one

present away...

from finishing the Christmas shopping.

Phew.

To be fair - in the end - my super organised mother got most of them for me but - still - it is a relief.

The question is... will people like them?

Well - I hope so.

But if not there is always the brilliance that is... "Swishing" or "Cadge-it".

I.e. The practise of getting loads of mates together and swapping clothes and gadgets.

Super simple way of getting rid of those unwanted gifts!

Plus if you add 'getting rid of all the leftover alcohol' to the mix then you could have the perfect recipe for cheap January entertainment (and/or an excruciating sherry-induced hangover...)

Anyhow - talking of hangovers... should probably stop rambling and find some more coffee!

Hope you have a lovely day though.

18/12/07 - It's taken a while

but finally...

managed to write my Christmas cards.

Despite protestations to my mother that it wasn't environmentally friendly there were some not-so-subtle threats and no getting away with it!

Anyhow - great aunts aside - this year it is all about the digital card.

If you haven't got round to sending yours yet you can sneak on the Envirowise site and find one on there.

Sorted.

Lovely.

Right - what else?

Um, haven't learnt too much today in an environmental type way but... did you know that male cats have a barbed penis!?!

(No idea how that came up in conversation last night but I definitely blame someone else! Aye, aye, aye - makes the eyes water a little).

Um - oh and - putting fat down the sink blocks drains. So be careful after your Christmas dinner.

Right - phew - exhausted after imparting such vital gems of knowledge.

Best have a little rest.

Have a good one!

17/12/07 - All very dramatic wasn't it

And so it begins...

Quite the soap opera ending to the Bali negotiations.

Calvin Jones's Climate Change blogspot gives a great run down of events (scroll down a bit on his site) but in general the US was opposing the final agreement until they got booed and heckled by the entire international community and the exasperated dude from Papua New Guinea braved a showdown:

"We ask for your leadership, we seek your leadership... if you can't give us what we want, please get out of the way."

After which they capitulated. (Woo hoo that man!)

Who said a bit of pressure and conviction can't work?

Phew.

Anyhow - the reason they were holding out was because the developing world were asking for the developed to do more to lead against climate change.

But if you check out the graphs next to this Beeb article on coal (scroll down a bit on that page to see them) you can see why they did.

The developed world does - and historically has - used a vast amount more fossil fuel per capita. I.e. if you take cumulative (historical) fossil fuel use, then a UK individual benefits from around 325 tonnes and someone from India approximately 5.

Which is a tad uneven you have to admit.

Still - despite the break through - Washington raised concerns immediately following the meetings.

There is now a two year negotiation period so I guess only time will tell what the real results are. All the more reason, though, to lend support to relevant campaigns (and pray for a change of direction in the US elections in November)!

Right - anyhow - back to the more mundane day to day for the minute.... The solar powered rickshaw plan!

Have a lovely start to the week.

This Section

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)

I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.

Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)

For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.

See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...

Interview Picture

What is this site all about?

Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?"

What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)

Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.

Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.

We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...

And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?

Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?

And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?

So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.

So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.

We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

The point

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.

In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:

Baby and Child

Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants

Transport
Travel

You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.

Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.

Give us a shout if you want to get involved!

Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.

We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
