Fact

This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

16/02/07 - What a beautiful day

Everyone gets together, saves the world, then has a party...

Brilliant!

Well - it could be.

We can hope so in any case.

Yesterday a new climate pact was signed between many nations (the G8 as well as China, Brazil, India Mexico and South Africa included).

Yeay.

Clearly it is a long way short of actual plans but it is a positive start.

And then there are Al Gore's Live8 style climate concerts to look forward to in July.

Apparently - "The talent involved is just exponentially bigger because the issue itself is bigger."

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, they have asked...

; )

Anyhow - better go practise but - yep - some great news to take us into the weekend.

Have a good one. (But don't forget to take the recycling out in all the excitement!)

15/02/07 - Jealousy

Loads of my mates are going snowboarding. And I can't...

Damnations.

But luckily I have a firtive imagination and so I will just get some ice from the freezer, put it on the stairs and fall down them bruising myself and rendering my ankle unusable.

It will be much the same as my previous snowboarding experience. Though I am less likely to take out as many children...

Anyhow - I like to think that my inability to go on holiday is an environmentally friendly thing.

Getting up my stairs uses far less energy (unless I have drunk a bit much... when it becomes not only energy intensive but - sometimes - actually impossible.) and global warming is a problem for skiing in Europe.

Check out Save Our Snow to see what is going on and what you can do about it.

At present rate it will be years before I get to go so I want to make sure there is still some fluffy white powder left when I do!

Right - better go but have a lovely morning and hope you got some lovely Valentines (recycle those cards!!)

14/02/07 - HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!

Hope that you get all sorts of...

(locally produced) flowers, home made chocolates and whispered sweet nothings.

I have yet to check my post as it doesn't come to my house but I hope the laundrette below is able to open despite the vast volume of gifts...

Ah well - if all else fails - my Mum often sends me a (very badly disguised) card!

Anyhow - I tried looking up a nice quote or something about the importance of love - but couldn't quite get past the distressing amount of pink that jumped out at me.

Lucky the BBC had an article about rugged explorers highlighting climate change with which I was instead distracted.

In fact - perhaps it would be useful for me to use today as an opportunity to establish the moral stance of all the attractive young men I see.

In the name of research of course...

Anyhow - have a good one.

Love from me and from Ollie and Lara too! x

13/02/07 - Everyone loves...

Being told how great they are.

So this Valentine's Day...

the Alliance Against Urban 4x4's are hoping to tell all of the people with Energy efficient cars just that!

Just got this in from them:

"We are launching a positive spin on our anti-4x4 campaign this week. We feel it's time to reward those drivers who have made the effort to buy a small and efficient vehicle. How many times have you passed a little electric G Whiz, Smart Car, Toyota Prius or Honda Hybrid and thought, "thank goodness someone is doing something different", and yet you didn't leave them a message to say "thanks for caring about our future".

Well, this Wednesday morning you can. We've designed a colourful Valentine which you can print, fold, cut and leave on a neighbor's fuel efficient car.

Instructions:
You'll need access to a color printer. Also, it helps (but isn't
essential) if you have printer paper that's heavier than 80gsm - 120 or 140 gsm (170gsm card is really excellent)

The file prints 2 cards onto one A4 sheet - If you are printing at
work and the printer has a duplexer unit then you'll need change the settings to print front and back. Otherwise you'll need to print the front, and then put it back in to print the back.

Once you're done printing, just fold in half and trim up with a
scissors or guillotine."

What a nice idea!!!

In fact - I might DIY some of my own cards for all of the people I notice doing good things.

Fun.

Anyhow - here is the card so you can hot footing it along to check out those fuel efficient machines.

And their gorgeous drivers!!!

12/02/07 - Back in 5...

Well technically on Tuesday - and actually it is Sunday today not Monday...

Whichever way - sadly some unforeseen circumstances.

Have a great start to the week though xx

This Section

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)

I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.

Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)

For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.

See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...

Interview Picture

What is this site all about?

Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?"

What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)

Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.

Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.

We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...

And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?

Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?

And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?

So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.

So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.

We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

The point

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.

In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:

Baby and Child

Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants

Transport
Travel

You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.

Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.

Give us a shout if you want to get involved!

Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.

We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
