Fact

This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

02/02/07 - So much information

On the environment at the minute....

Great articles in all the newspapers, the BBC mentions it non-stop and the curriculum is changing to teach the issues to school children.

Brilliant.

So - I thought today I would (inspired by the recent Rocky resurgence) attempt a written 'combating climate change montage' to inspire a bit of action!

No idea how this will go... about to find out....

Cue theme tune:

Dun - dun dun dun - dun dun dun - dun dun duuuuuuuuuun

Risin up...

Push ups, neck/finger stretching, bit of bouncing on the toes, throw out a couple of punches, bring it on!!

Back on the streets...

Heading out with the recycling.

Took my time...

And then on to wait for the bus.

Took my chances...

Scowl at lone driver in a massive car.

Went the distance...

Arrive at work.

Now I'm back on my feet...

Walking into the office up the stairs rather than taking the lift.

Just a man...

Erm - amusing cut away to some finely toned men doing push ups (I'm allowed. It's a montage!!)

With a will to survive...

Etc etc

Oh it would be great!

Just need a camcorder and some gorgeous young gentlemen. Might get on the case. Can't see a downside...

; )

Have a great weekend xx

01/02/07 - Total overload!

So again - short and sweet but...

have been learning all sorts of things with which to bore you later.

Been attending some lectures on the environment and there are more to come today (be warned I got very excited about the intricacies of solar panels).

What I did want to mention is how brilliant video conferencing is!

Being a lecture on the environment I was pleased to see some video conferencing in action.

But - even better than the positive results this has on transport emissions - it is hilarious watching the other people on the screens!

(Let's ignore for now the fact that they are probably thinking exactly the same!)

Fantastic.

Those 'between speaker' dull parts (where the projector / mouse / lighting invariably break) are so much more entertaining!

Anyhow - more of that fun later on today so best be getting along.

Have a good'un x

oooh p.s. thought that a picture of video conferencing was a bit dull so thought I'd use one of the breakfast I hope to track down! Hmmmm hungry...

31/01/07 - Bit of an overload

Of things going on here. So today it's...

some far more inspiring words from others.

I read this quote yesterday and for a daydreamer like me it is brilliant.

"If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." - Henry David Thoreau

(We have loads of others stored in our imaginatively entitled 'quotes page' if you want to check them out too.)

Nothing like a good bit of castle building.

In fact, might get along with some right now.

Well - that or get sidetracked contemplating Heath Ledger as a buff young knight...

Either way - the day seems more manageable already!

30/01/07 - Even more fun!

Though possibly not so easy or quite so cheap...

Re. the issue of not flying there are - as excitedly noted yesterday - loads of options for holidaying close to home.

But it doesn't mean that we can't go abroad at all.

With a bit of creativity and planning it is easy to hop on the Eurostar, head to Europe and go wherever the wind takes.

A friend of mine went skiing this year on it and had to come home early. Without any fuss, expense or delay she just caught an earlier train back.

And the journey was a piece of cake.

Perfect.

If you have more time and fancy a bit more of an odessy then there is always the 'getting round the world without flying' challenge.

Ed from Futerra will be doing just that at the beginning of March (lucky, lucky bu**er!) and his adventures and exploits will be followed in a travel blog on the Guardian website.

Amazing.

The world is our Oyster - so much fun!

29/01/07 - So easy, so fun, so cheap

And back for tea...

Over the last month, there has been mutterings about whether or not we should be flying.

I am sure there will be mutterings for a lot longer too. (Especially in the - always depressing - month of February when the thought of a sunny beach is remarkably alluring).

But I have just come back from an amazing weekend and only went as far as.... Dorking.

It was brilliant!

I am doing a big race at the end of March* and so have been doing loads of running and walking.

This weekend was a bit of hiking in the North Downs.... The North Downs which happen to be 30 mins train ride out of Victoria.

How did they get so close??

I was certain that you had to head at least 4 hours from London to get to such gorgeous scenery but there are hills right on our doorstep.

And it cost £3 for us to get there on the train and £5.50 back.

Bargain.

No passports, check-in, screaming children, lack of leg room, plastic food or giving myself a headache trying ALL the perfumes in duty free.

Instead, sun, fresh air, idle banter, llamas and a ferret.

No time off work. No early rising. No re mortgaging the house.

I will definitely be out and about a lot more!

So if you are looking for a low-carbon weekend break, or even just something quick and relaxing why not have a look a bit closer to home?

So much fun.

Just realising though that - the downside of not taking time off work means I best get a move on to get there...

Have a lovely start to the week!

x

*For which I will have to fly - I can't totally justify it but I signed up for it before my pledge not to take air travel and so - for good or ill - decided to stick with it.

This Section

This section will be a daily, well - Monday to Friday daily, editorial. (Have to keep some time aside to keep up the ritual wine drinking / dancing as if being chased by bees.)

I promise to make it my mission to investigate something each day on exciting forays to find new stuff, fun stuff, ethical stuff and anything involving break dancing men with extremely toned physiques.

Let me know if you think of something I should go and visit or if you have any great ideas or information. (Any dodgy suggestions will be politely declined... or not so politely, depending entirely on what they are!)

For today, though, please just have a look below to find out how this whole thing came about. I hope that you are having a lovely morning.

See you tomorrow,

Background to This is not my...

Interview Picture

What is this site all about?

Well, as all good ventures do, it started in the pub with the ominous words "I know, why don't we...?"

What was different, though, was that it still seemed like a good plan in the morning (and somewhat less injurious than trying out extreme ironing, the other suggestion...)

Anyway - once again we had been supping beers and putting the world to rights when someone mentioned the unmentionable, despite our disaffection with the state of the world, none of us was actually doing anything positive to change it.

Whether this was complacency or apathy, who knows - but we were definitely leaving it to others to make decisions and take action for us on issues about which we felt strongly.

We live in a free society, but often things seem to happen as a fait accompli. The war in Iraq, ID cards, the fact that we will eventually succumb to watching some of Big Brother no matter how hard we try...

And we just go along with it. But that is ok, right? I mean, we aren't exactly encouraging the abuse of others - are we?

Ok - so maybe my new top might have been made under less-than-perfect conditions and I suppose that means I am supporting those conditions, but - I have to buy something to wear, so what other choice do I have?

And that was the problem. What - and where - are the choices?

So we decided to investigate. Surely in this free society we have other options; we just need to know how to find them.

So we went online. There are some great directories already for ethical and/or environmentally friendly products, but for us these didn't go far enough. We were on a bit of a roll and decided that these products deserved more active promotion.

We wanted to make as many people as possible aware of the practical things they can do to live life in a better way.

The point

So on this site we will provide information about easy, positive and ethical consumer choices. These are choices that won’t necessarily cost you more, either.

In our directories you will find environmentally friendly and ethical companies and products across the following categories:

Baby and Child

Clothes
Energy
Food and Drink
Health and Beauty
Home and Garden
Office
Recycling
Restaurants

Transport
Travel

You will also find plenty more to lure you back to the site on a regular basis. So come back to have a wee look.

Plus we will be working on video's, events and curious antics to keep important issues in the public eye – and provide us with much entertainment and amusement at the same time.

Give us a shout if you want to get involved!

Anyhow - take a look. Explore… investigate… probe away.

We hope you like it; we hope you use it.
